HISTORY OF COACH BUILT FERRARI'S

The story of this Ferrari 400i Convertible begins way back in the 1960’s with the famous 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder. At the urging of Ferrari’s North American importer Luigi Chinetti, ten 275 GTBs were converted by Scaglietti to open-top roadsters and offered to the most exclusive Ferrari customers in the USA. Such miniscule production meant plenty of qualified buyers were left out and for some well-heeled enthusiasts, having the money wasn’t a guaranteed path to ownership. The car’s elegant beauty also inspired owners of 275 GTB berlinettas to consider taking matters outside of Ferrari and converting their own cars to spyders. In the early 1970s, a gifted young engineer and coach builder named Richard Straman was commissioned to do just that – remove the roof of a 275GTB, and fashion a proper, functional folding roof. Straman’s conversion was beautifully executed and soon orders poured in for more cars.

Ferrari neglected to build a convertible version of the 400i, but some well off customers were not to be deprived. This had created a market for California Coach Builder, Richard Straman of Costa Mesa, who over the last 40 years has converted numerous Ferrari Daytona into Spyders, nine Ferrari 275 GTS/4, three Ferrari Berlinetta Boxers as Targa’s, and 22 Ferrari Testarossa’s (including one for the late Michel Jackson) and other exotic cars to soft-top configuration. This involves more than simply removing the roof, as the chassis must be strengthened to withstand addition stresses.

THIS FERRARI

1983 Ferrari 400i Convertible by Straman Coach Work. This beautiful Pininfarina designed four cam V12 powered Ferrari has only 19,868 original miles since new. It has lived its entire sheltered life in Southern California where it was constructed in 1994 into a convertible by the highly respected Coach Builder R. Straman Company in Costa Mesa, CA for a hefty price tag of $40,000 (which is approximately $95,000 in today’s dollars) additionally on top of the price of this car new.

This exceptional and preserved Ferrari runs and drives perfectly, the transmission shifts very smoothly, the four wheel disk brakes are excellent, factory cold AC, factory power steering, power windows, and of course NO rust.

Very few people have had the chance to experience and discover how user friendly and fun this wonderful car is to drive even for tall and large drivers, which can not be said about so many other great Ferrari's models.

This is a very rare opportunity to own an extremely preserved and desirable Straman convertible. It is the most affordable (inexpensive) tickets to the big Ferrari events like the prestige Cavallino Classic Concorso d' Eleganza at the Breaker, Palm Beach Florida or similar events around the world. It is also a very touring friendly Grand Turismo Vintage Ferrari for long touring events with all its convenient options like A/C, power steering, power windows etc. It is the only V12 powered four seater Ferrari cabriolet ever made. With other words, a user friendly reliable and comfortable classic Ferrari an extremely rare model and a very desirable color combination.
